GRAND ISLAND — A rainbow of elementary schoolchildren in brightly colored T-shirts petted newborn piglets, squealed in delight as older pigs raced around a track toward an Oreo cookie reward, and explored other exhibits related to agriculture, art and fun.
It was a first Nebraska State Fair for many of the children and adults visiting the new fairgrounds Thursday at Fonner Park in Grand Island. Fair officials, exhibitors, vendors, ag boosters and longtime fair fans hope it won’t be their last.
