Kearney High’s Maggie Maher and Elm Creek’s Shelby Meier were both double winners at the Don Bader Invitational in Lexington. Maher won the pole vault and the 100, while Meier took the long jump and triple jump. On the boy’s side Freshman Jacob Olson, from Kearney High, won his first varsity gold in the 800. (more…)
Union Pacific and Nebraska Operation Lifesaver, a national nonprofit education and awareness program, offered area residents free train rides Friday in Kearney. Passengers departed from Kearney at Ave. K and Railroad St. and learned about railroad safety on the 1.5 hour train ride. (more…)

Holdrege senior Kellie Fegter and Kristin Killough set the Holdrege High School pole vault record, clearing 11 feet at the Marsh Beck Invitational in Minden. The 1-2 finish by Fegter and Killough helped Holdrege to the team title. Gibbon’s Jericca Pearson was another top performer in the meet, winning the high jump, the triple jump and the 200. (more…)

Kearney Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 821 Ave. B in Kearney Wednesday morning. As smoke billowed from the windows, resident Casandra Hedglin escaped from the roof of the apartment house with the assistance of neighbor Clarence Patterson and Assistant Fire Chief Trent Snow.
