Zumba spices up Strong Kids fundraiser

KEARNEY — Zumba fanatics at Kearney Family YMCA shimmied, shook and toned their bodies to the beat of the Latin-inspired fitness method.

The first Zumbathon was Saturday morning at the Y.

Fitness coordinator Shari Geiser said she organized the outdoor event to invite people who aren’t members at the Y to see what the Y has to offer — exciting classes and 10 energetic, certified instructors.

The Zumbathon’s $5 admission benefited the Strong Kids campaign, which provides membership assistance to families in need.

“Over $100,000 in assistance was awarded last year,” said membership manager Cindy Mangels.

Fish to Shields connection leads KHS to 17-7 win

Franks reconnect with family ancestry

Thursday, Frank family decedents visited the historic Frank House on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.

Edwin Frank, the great-great-grandson of George Washington Frank (who built the mansion in 1889) brought his daughter Emma to visit the house.

The Franks lived in Kearney through the 1890s, and were responsible for bringing electricity and early investors to the city.

In cooperation with Otis Air and the Kearney Municipal Airport, UNK prepares their aviation majors with the knowledge and experience to pilot everything from an American Airlines aircraft to a corporate jet for the Buckle.With a limited number of resources, focus for the four year program must take a wider perspective as opposed to specialized training, meaning graduates of the program will have a variety of careers to pursue from within the industry.

Hostage-taker sentenced to up to 130 years in prison

Jonathon Buckley was sentenced up to 130 years in prison today (Monday) for taking Wells Fargo employees and customers hostage Feb. 10 in Kearney.

He was convicted in July of four counts of felony kidnapping and one count of using a sawed-off shotgun to commit a felony. For more updates on the story, click here.
